Saranda is the gateway to the south of Albania and one of the main holiday destinations to the sea in the country. The city has about 33.000 inhabitants and is situated on a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay between the mountains and the Ionian Sea. The name Saranda derives from an early Christian monastery dedicated to Agioi Saranta (Forty Saints), while in ancient times it was known as Onchesmus.
Located facing the Greek island of Corfu, Saranda is characterized by a Mediterranean climate and warm sea waters. This coastal area boasts well more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Thanks to its location and warm climate, Saranda is one of the most attractive tourist resorts on the Albanian Riviera, where even the locals spend their holidays or honeymoons. On the seafront, the area most frequented by tourists, there are large hotels and restaurants offering catering and accommodation services.

In the latter it is among the main destinations for cheap holidays by the sea in the Mediterranean. It might be a good choice for those looking for a low cost trip with a fantastic sea.
