The colorful village dedicated to culture

To know the origins of the most colorful village in South Korea we must take a step back in time between the 20s and 30s of the last century. In this hilly area, slightly detached from the rest of the city of Busan, buildings were built housing intended for the poorest families. These, however, lived here for a short time, leaving the village in search of better conditions. Many houses were thus abandoned.

In 2009, however, the Korean government chose to redevelop this place, calling upon young artists from all over the country. One of the first interventions was to color the roofs and walls of the houses, with the aim of making the town more welcoming and attractive.

The old houses were now disused renovated and transformed into museums and art galleries. But that was only the beginning: in about four years various artistic installations began to populate the streets and squares of the city. To these, then, were also added the murals which today make the village an open-air museum. A microcosm of colorful wonders that comes to life step by step.

After the renovation, Gamcheon Culture Village has transformed into a real one tourist attraction, perhaps the most popular in Busan and South Korea. Since 2016, in fact, the colorful village has been included several times in the list of unmissable places in the country, attracting around 3 million visitors every year.
