What to see around Guatapé

The most incredible and famous attraction of these places is undoubtedly El Peñón de Guatapé (or Piedra del Peñol) a impressive monolith which stands out in the surroundings of the town, reaching 2135 meters above sea level. It was climbed for the first time in July 1954 by Luis Villegas, Pedro Nel Ramírez and Ramón Díaz during a five-day ascent, who helped themselves by driving several stakes into the rock. Fortunately, today it is possible to climb to the top via a long, steep zigzag staircase. 740 steps in total, partially excavated in a rock fracture. Even at the top, a three-story tower was built, which houses small souvenir shops and outdoor tables where you can eat and drink while enjoying a truly unparalleled view. If you think that all these stairs discourage visitors, you will be surprised to discover that there are actually many tourists who come here every year precisely for the famous Stone.


Guatapé is characterized by being a very picturesque place that allows an escape from the city if you want to relax or simply live a wonderful adventure, where you can also enjoy the splendid landscape of a charming lagoon. Ideal for a boat or kayak excursion and for paddle surfing in calm waters. Boat trips can also include a visit to what remains of Pablo Escobar's destroyed lakeside luxury villa and “Fantasy Island”, a charming refuge in the middle of the reservoir, which offers a swimming area, cabins for rent and beautiful views of the Rock. There is also one cableway that crosses the lake, much appreciated by locals and visitors seeking thrills.
