Is called The Rock and it's a restaurant built directly on a rock in Zanzibar. Located on the small peninsula of Michamwi Pingwe, in the south east of the island, it is an hour's journey from city of Stone Town. Until 2010 it was just a small fisherman's hut, shortly after the idea of an Italian entrepreneur transformed it into one of the most famous and loved restaurants in Zanzibar.
The Rock offers simple but tasty cuisine, with a menu that varies often and is created with fresh fish, combining the flavors of Mediterranean tradition and the spicy taste of Zanzibar's gastronomic tradition. The restaurant seats 30/40 people and has a terrace overlooking the ocean, where you can enjoy an aperitif before the meal, relax and sunbathe.
The typical house, built with a roof of woven coconut leaves, can be reached either on foot or by boat. In the morning, at low tide, visitors go to the restaurant walking on the sand and getting your feet wet, while in the afternoon, when the tide rises, it is necessary to be accompanied by a boat made available by the restaurant. Once inside you can enjoy appetizers and first courses at a cost of around 15 dollars and second courses for 20 dollars, while one of the most famous dishes is the The Rock Special, mixed grill with lobster, sea cicada, prawns, calamari and fish fillet, which costs 42 dollars. Here you can also try local wines and beers, such as Killimanjaro and Safari.
The restaurant is located outside the tourist circuits, which is why i all inclusive villages they do not offer excursions in this area. To visit it, tourists will have to do everything on their own, booking a table (usually through the hotel reception) and reaching Michamwi Pingwe, where The Rock is located, by taxi.
