Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

With 3/4 million tourists a year, it is one of the busiest areas in all of Indonesia to choose from. where to sleep in bali Finding the right area is very important, as the decision can make it wonderful or ruin the trip.

Bali is, however, despite the crowds, a paradise, with its rice terraces cascading down volcanic slopes, flaming sunsets, the sea lapping at white sandy beaches and a unique and pervasive culture that dominates the island despite the continued growth of tourism.

The Island of the Gods has much more to offer than luxury resorts and is small enough to get around even during the day, although I recommend moving around and staying in different areas to really maximize your time in Bali.

Whether you have decided to visit Bali for the amazing luxury hotels and resorts, to surf and dive, to explore the mountain scenery and ancient temples, you are sure to find an area in Bali that is perfect for you.

Most backpackers opt for hedonistic Kuta, while well-heeled vacationers flock to posh Seminyak for cocktail lounges and boutique hotels. Those traveling with children to Bali tend to gravitate toward areas with calm waters, such as Nusa Dua, Jimbaran or Sanur.

Yoga enthusiasts and hippies flock to Ubud looking for their version of "Eat Pray Love." Hardcore surfers love to hang out in Uluwatu because that's where the best waves are, while divers head straight to Tulamben in the north.

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

After the months I lived (and traveled) I wrote this post to help you, depending on what you are looking for, to choose the best area to stay in bali.

North of Bali: which area to choose:

Amed

Amed remains a quiet and authentic area, a fishing village that has been developing in tourism in recent years.

Amed is particularly suitable for snorkeling and diving . There are several beach restaurants where you can relax in the evening while admiring the imposing Agung volcano.

The beaches are black volcanic pebbles, but the waters are particularly transparent.

In addition, Amed is also the fastest and cheapest starting point to go to the Gili Islands.

Particularly recommended is the Jemeluk Beach area where the sea is very beautiful and offers the opportunity to explore the seabed just meters from the shore.

Amed continues being a good option to lodge in Bali for those that look for a place far from the tourism of masses. For the lovers of the snorkeling and for all that one that knows a little to adapt. I recommend to choose a good hotel because the standards of quality are not very high here.

Important: Amed is very close to the Agung volcano, so given the recent eruptions it is preferable to monitor the situation.

South of Bali: that zone to choose

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

Canggu

Canggu is a new zone, a few years ago there was practically nothing but rice fields.

In the last years, the zone has been filled with bars, restaurants and cafeterias of fashion.

Canggu is perfect for those who want to learn to surf, there are many surf schools and the waves are especially suitable for beginners. I can assure you that I have personally tried them.

Gili

As we have seen, the sea of Bali is characterized mainly by turbulent waters and is ideal for surf lovers. There are some beaches with calmer sea but if you look for crystalline waters where to make snorkeling and to admire the wonderful marine bottom it is better to opt for the near ones. Gili Island.

Although the opinions about the Gilis are varied, I liked them a lot. In particular I have been on Gili Trawangan, the most touristic. The island is quite chaotic, full of restaurants, but there are also quieter and calmer areas with perfect places to swim with turtles and many tropical fish.

The best zone to sleep in Bali: Ubud

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

Located to the north of Sanur, in the high lands of the island is the cultural and artistic center of Bali, Ubud. Once a quiet artists' village, it has now become a mini-metropolis thanks to tourism, made famous by Julia Roberts in the hit movie "Eat, Pray, Love".

Despite this, given its central location on the island, Ubud is one of the best places to sleep to explore the surrounding region. full of temples, rice paddies and mountains. In the city of Ubud itself, there is also a hodgepodge of interesting museums and temples that are among the best in Bali.

Ubud is also famous for traditional crafts and dance. The main street of the city is dotted with art galleries that exhibit the most precious Balinese art and sculptures.

It is easy to rent a car with driver to visit the incredible nearby attractions, like the sculptures of Gunung Kawi or the more distant and less visited areas, like rice terraces of Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage site or other attractions created by the man, like the zoo in bali.

The transfers in minibus, the treks and the tours in mountain bike are shorter and cheaper from Ubud than in the cities more to the south.

When talking about where to sleep in Ubud, it essentially means choosing between two options: stay in the town itself or stay in the outskirts.

Option 1: Stay in Ubud Village

There are many reasons to stay in Ubud Village. If this is your first time in Ubud, it will be easier to explore, eat at restaurants, shop and visit different spas. You will also have easy access to the Ubud Monkey Forest.

The center of Ubud is compact and easy to explore on foot, which makes it the ideal place to sleep if you don't want to rent a scooter or take a cab.

On the other hand, there are also some disadvantages: the downside is that the city center is more touristy and crowded.

Option 2: stay in the outskirts of Ubud

Outside the center you will find most of the luxury and mid-range hotels: some are not very far from the city, others a bit further, but all have a fabulous feature (the kind I like).

These hotels are often immersed in the jungle or surrounded by rice fields and offer unique experiences to explore nature and the surrounding community. On the other hand, you will need to plan your transportation and transfers well.

So, is it better to stay in town or out of town? There is no right or wrong choice, they are simply different from each other and which one to choose essentially depends on what you prefer.

Ubud is a city where you can sleep in excellent hotels at an almost negligible price. While there are some larger hotels outside the city (including the luxury brands Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons), most of those in the center are small guesthouses, villas, B&Bs and hostels.

Many accommodation options in Ubud have swimming pools, excellent amenities and include breakfast.

Best Cheap Hotels in Ubud

Krisna House

Krisna House: Located near the heart of Ubud, Krisna House offers affordable, clean and modern rooms. Facilities include an outdoor pool with sun loungers, perfect for relaxing during the day. All in all, one of the best choices among budget hotels in Ubud.

It is within walking distance of the center of Ubud, so you can enjoy the peace and quiet or immerse yourself in the bustling city, whichever you prefer.

In Ubud you will find an almost endless variety of cheap hotels and hostels. Not all of them are good, so choose carefully before booking. It's also not uncommon for hotel rooms to cost less than a place in a shared dorm in a hostel.

Although, given hotel prices, I would prefer a mid-budget hotel, I sought out the best budget accommodations in town.

1 - En Da Lodge

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

The property offers ten rooms with fan, hot and cold water and private bathrooms. Rooms have balconies or terraces overlooking the rice fields. A koi canal runs through the property and its garden. WiFi is available in the cafeteria and other public areas of the property.

Biyukukung Suite and Spa: Ten minutes from Ubud's Monkey Forest, this hotel overlooks Balinese rice fields. For the price, this is a pretty luxurious option.

I bet after seeing the luxury hotels in Ubud, moving on to the lower-end ones you have a bit of Magone - don't worry, it happens to me too!

In this case, however, for mid-range hotels you have many options and also spend less you can get the most you can imagine.

In fact, you can find a wide selection of three- and four-star hotels at great prices, many of which feature comfortable rooms and luxury amenities like outdoor pools, spas, yoga areas and more.

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

Ten minutes from Ubud's monkey forest, this hotel overlooks Balinese rice fields. For the price, this is a fairly luxurious option, with a pool and a few on-site restaurants.

Biyukukung Suites & Spa is "blessed" by the stunning scenery of the rice paddies. Very close to the center of Ubud and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, the hotel also bets as an eco-friendly resort supporting some projects with the local population.

All rooms are similar: small and classically furnished with comfortable beds that open onto a private balcony overlooking the rice field. Bathrooms are much better in the deluxe rooms.

Rooms are clean and, although some look old (but recently renovated), the bamboo bungalows are charming and traditionally built.

2 - Sri Ratih Cottages

5 - Artotel Haniman Ubud

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

Just steps from the Monkey Forest, this modern hotel is clean, with a restaurant, bar and pool. Compared to many hotels in Ubud, this one is different, with its quirky artistic theme and colorful artwork on the walls.

The hotel is non-smoking, the reception is open 24h / 24 and, given its excellent location, is a good starting point for visiting the surrounding area of Ubud.

I love the look of their spacious studios with balconies; it seems like the perfect choice for couples looking for a place to stay in Ubud.

Best Luxury Hotels in Ubud

Kayumanis Ubud Private Villas & Spa is located on the outskirts, just a 10-15 minute drive from Ubud town (the hotel offers free transportation) and thanks to its quiet and secluded location, it offers spectacular views of the rainforest landscape.

Walking through the lush pathways, the gates of the resort open onto private courtyards with sitting and dining areas, beautiful pools and villas. If you are looking for privacy, luxury and a relaxing atmosphere, you will have no problem finding them at Kayumanis.

2 - Hanging Gardens of Bali

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

Anyone who is thinking of sleeping in Ubud has probably heard of the Hanging Gardens of Bali. This is a famous hotel of luxury, also immersed in the environment of the jungle. The ambience and the views are sublime.

The bright, one-, two- or three-bedroom villas have river views and wooden balconies offering jungle views or private plunge pools.

The edges of the main infinity pool seem to hang over the valley. Although it feels like you're in a remote location, the hotel is actually just a 10-minute drive from Ubud.

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

As expected of a Ritz-Carlton property, Mandapa is an incredible luxury resort that boasts some of the best suites, villas and facilities of any hotel in Ubud.

The resort offers a variety of high quality restaurants, which means you can also avoid going all the way to Ubud (which is not far, about a 15 minute drive) and can spend your days relaxing here.

6 - The Kayon Jungle Resort by Pramana

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

The Kayon Jungle Resort by Pramana Embraces the best of Ubud. The resort is decorated with reliefs and statues from the Ramayana epic and, along with the delicate traditional architecture, creates a serene and romantic ambiance. Guests can practice yoga in the pavilion, watch traditional performances or take a dip in the infinity pool.

The Kayon is one of those resorts that you look up on the Internet and think "I'm going here for my honeymoon!" However, if you can afford to spend a few days here, whether it's your honeymoon or not, don't miss this opportunity.

Best place to sleep in Bali for couples or honeymooners: Jimbaran

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

By Yusnizam Yusof /

Located just a 10-minute drive from the airport, Jimbaran is where most people choose to sleep at least a couple of nights after their arrival or before they leave. Once a small fishing village with a daily market, it is now home to several five-star beach resorts.

Despite the proximity to the airport, Jimbaran is a quiet and romantic place, with its long white sand beach ideal for sunbathing (and with the most beautiful sunsets) and good quality (but a bit pricey) seafood restaurants.

Every evening, the beach is lined with tables and chairs, while seaside cafes offer romantic candlelit dinners with fresh seafood, as well as fireworks, wandering musicians and traditional dancing.

Where to sleep in Bali with children: Nusa Dua

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

By nikjvt /

Most resorts in Nusa Dua promote romantic vacations, with special offers for newlyweds and "honeymoon suites," but your hotel could be swamped with families because Nusa Dua is also one of the most popular places to sleep with kids.

In bilico in the south end of Bali, this area has the best beaches of the island: great empty extensions of white pearly sand and transparent and transparent waters.

Nusa Dua has two separated parts: thetourist zone fenced that is far from everything, e Tanjung Benoa, that counts on several stores and local restaurants. The gated area is where all the five-star hotel chains are located side by side.

The dozens of exclusive resorts in Nusa Dua are ideal for families, each with a children's pool (often with water slides) and a kids' club offering engaging activities as well as extensive menus and childcare services.

Just to the north, the resort region of Tanjung Benoa is a cheaper version of Nusa Dua and is arguably more appealing to teenagers due to its wide range of affordable water sports.

Where to sleep for nightlife: Seminyak

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

Di Setiono Joko Purwanto /

Seminyak is the nightlife capital of Bali, but is a much more upscale version of Kuta (the backpacker party town).

Although it has become much more touristy in the last years, its atmosphere continues being relatively calm and relaxed and is known by its boutiques that border the main street, the restaurants of world-wide class and bars and beach clubs. Having a sunset drink on the beach (sitting on a bean bag!) is something that every first-time visitor to Bali should include in their itinerary.

Here you will also find the famous beach clubs Ku De Ta and Cara de Papa that attract famous DJs from around the world. Chic hotels like the W Retreat & Spa have attracted international attention.

Where to stay on a budget: Kuta

Where to stay in Bali: Best Areas and Hotels (2022)

Di Netfalls Remy Musser /

I put Kuta as a place to spend little in bali essentially because it is close to the airport, full of nightclubs, bars, small stores and lots of bargain opportunities. There are plenty of accommodation and shopping options at good prices and located right on the beach.

I honestly don't like it and don't want to advise you to go there unless you are very young, want to spend very little and are mainly interested in clubs and nightlife.

Once a simple rustic fishing village, Kuta is now filled with a myriad of accommodation, dining and entertainment options. The long beach with consistent waves attracts surfers from all over the world and is perfect for beginners. There are endless options for rentals and lessons.

Many activities in Kuta focus on nightlife and shopping. Here you will find the highest concentration of clubs like the famous Sky Bar and large shopping malls. It is the perfect city if you are a young traveler on a tight budget. If you have more time and a little more money to spend, I recommend you go to Seminyak.

Bali may be famous for its beaches and rice fields, but it was surfers who first discovered this beautiful Indonesian island. The best waves of the island are in the southwest end of the peninsula of Bukit in Bali.
