This small village located in the Canton of Friborg, in western Switzerland, is the ideal starting point for those who want to enjoy a peaceful holiday mountain vacation, but also for those who love excursions. From here, dozens of paths unravel across the length and breadth of the Swiss Alps, promising the most adventurous a unique experience in the world.
Of course, Charmey is hardly the only village to own great charm for hikers, but by learning about its particular characteristics we discover that it is one of the best places that Switzerland can offer us.
The town is in fact located in strategic position, no more than a couple of hours by train from Geneva, where the state's main airport is located. Same journey to get to Charmey it's already a fantastic adventure: just look out the window to discover views that have nothing to envy of many more renowned tourist destinations. Once you arrive there, you will discover that the town is so small that it does not suffer from the common inconveniences due to traffic or crowds of tourists. However, there is no need to give up comfort: in a few kilometers you can find various accommodations, for every type of need, but also shops, restaurants, bars and a relaxing wellness centre.
But let's go back to the starting point: Charmey is the ideal place for those who love sports in the mountains. In winter, its ski slopes welcome all those who wish to dedicate themselves to a peaceful descent. In other seasons, however, excursions are the most popular nordic walking and cycling. Two-wheel enthusiasts can take advantage of the Lakes route, a long itinerary to travel by MTB or e-bike to discover the seven most evocative bodies of water in Switzerland, enjoying in the meantime breathtaking views.
They also depart from Charmey numerous trails to explore the mountains backpacker. There is a wide choice for all needs, from the most experienced hikers who wish to spend whole days in the Alps to beginners who want to dedicate themselves to a nice walk for a few hours. There are 13 peaks to climb, so there is certainly no risk of getting bored. And to fill up on energy, let's remember that Charmey is the home of one of the best cheeses in the world, the renowned Gruyère DOP: after a long excursion, there is nothing better than enjoying good food.
