Laax is a municipality on the Swiss Alps, famous above all for its numerous ski slopes. But in this village in the Canton of Grisons of just over 1600 inhabitants it is also possible to do other activities including visiting the Swiss Christmas markets. Where to ski in Laax
Laax is considered one of the largest ski areas in all of Switzerland. Thanks to the altitude of Advance glacier, a fascinating glacier located in 3018 meters, the valley is always covered in snow, a true paradise for every skier. For several years, the slopes of Laax have hosted the Ski World Cup, the European Alpine Skiing Cup and the Freestyle World Cup. The beauty and modernity of the facilities satisfy even the most demanding skiers: 224 kilometers of slopes for all tastes and all levels and two ski-walk links.
In the area of Laax – Flims – Falera, in addition to alpine skiing, it is also possible to practice snowboarding, carving, cross-country skiing, curling and paragliding. For cross-country skiing, there are approx 55 km of track, which can also be used at night, thanks to two illuminated slopes: one of 2,5 kilometers in Sagogn and one of 3 kilometers in Trin. And then 60 kilometers of trekking paths wintry, around 33 bars, 20 refuges, 11 shops where you can rent skis and snowboards and much more.
Lo snowboard it is in fact one of the most appreciated specialties by visitors, who come from all over the world. In Laax there is the professional school "Snowboard Freestyle Academy" and every year competitions are held involving professionals or simple enthusiasts. Whoever you prefer the sled instead it has two runways available: the Foppa-Flims, which extends for over 3 kilometres, and the Curnius-Falera, over 3,5 kilometers long. This route is also illuminated at night. In Laax the slopes are also for the very little ones: well due kindergarten where you can play and have fun in freedom.
Laax: what to do off the ski slopes
Laax is not just snow and ski facilities. The Swiss resort is also very popular off the ski slopes and at other times of the year, when the green of the mountains takes the place of the snow. In addition to the various possibilities for recreation and relaxation in the shelters and in the different areas of the country, with themed festivals and shows, in spring and summer it is possible to go on beautiful excursions. The mountain bike trails, extended for approximately 230 kilometres, allow you to enjoy breathtaking views and reach enchanting places. Those who don't want to give up swimming can immerse themselves in one of the many crystal clear lakes present.
Not far away is there Great Flims Forest, the largest forest area in the Canton of Grisons, where you can go on pleasant excursions on foot. Or you can reach the Rhine Gorge, known as the "Grand Canyon of Switzerland", for its imposing rock walls overlooking the Rhine valley. In summer the climate is very pleasant and invites you to spend time outdoors. The more sporty can take advantage of it to practice sports and outdoor activities such as golf, tennis, badminton, fishing or rowing.
