What they do in Switzerland when the foliage ends in autumn

What they do in Switzerland when the foliage ends in autumnIn Switzerland they are so precise that there are even those who tidy up the leaves that have fallen from the trees

Autumn, with its colorful foliage, is probably the most chaotic season in the eyes of those who prefer order and rigor like the Swiss. And it is therefore the perfect challenge for the Swiss comedian Ursus Wehrli who transformed his mania for order into a bizarre and ironic art form.

Wehrli is famous for having broken down and rearranged the works of Picasso and Van Gogh, for having even tried to create some order among the stars in the firmament. Today, the tidying genius also tries his hand at autumn leaves.

The result is an installation in perfect "Art of Clean Up" style, the book that collects his previous tidying up works. “By rearranging things, I get a different approach,” says Wehrli, “that's why the idea of autumn leaves immediately fascinated me.”

Hired by Switzerland Tourism, Wehrli tidied up the Rieterpark in Zurich for a day, transforming a pile of leaves into a colorful ten-square-metre installation, then putting everything back into disarray so as not to naturally compromise the park's ecosystem.

The video plays on the cliché of the Swiss as neat freaks and the Swiss tourism office thus wants to celebrate the facets of autumn as inspiration for future trips and trips out of town.

Thanks to a color map published on the institution's website, it is possible to observe in real time where the color of the leaves is reaching its peak. The autumn map of Switzerland indicates where and when the woods light up with the most dazzling colors and suggests excursions to take to admire the foliage, also providing practical information on autumn leaves.

The information provided by the map is as precise as the Swiss. The interactive map shows leaf color (current and expected) across the country. This virtual map comes updated every week starting from mid-August until the beginning of November. It is based on data relating to aridity, heat and quantity of precipitation recorded in Switzerland and also includes data from the previous autumn and information provided by the experts of the SRF Meteo team.
