The multi-coloured village of Marsaxlokk in Malta

The colorful fishing village and its particular boats with eyes, the luzzi

It has very ancient origins Marsaxlokk, the Maltese fishing village with an unpronounceable name and colorful houses, famous for its boats with eyes. Are the Luzzi, boats painted in bright colors in shades of yellow, red, green and blue. On the bow there are two painted eyes, similar to those that decorated the ancient Phoenician and Greek ships: they are the eyes of Osiris or Horus, which according to tradition protect the boat from misfortune. And in fact this type of boat, the luzzu, has for centuries demonstrated resistance and stability even in the face of the worst weather.

The name Marsaxlokk in Maltese means “southeast port”. Near the village is the collina di Tas-Silj, where there are the remains of ancient megalithic temples as well as finds from the Bronze Age. Through Phoenician and Greek domination and until the Roman age, for centuries the hill was a religious site, with a temple dedicated to Astarte-Hera. Finally, in the Christian era, a monastery was probably built there.

Today, Marsaxlokk is the busiest Maltese port when it comes to fishery. In front of the town, in the sea, hundreds of lights they watch over the serenity and safety of the village, giving it a touch of colorful cheerfulness.
